Sheep Farm
Our boutique lifestyle block on the outskirts of Blenheim is home to around 30 Gotland sheep. Gotland sheep are an ancient Scandinavian breed, originally reared by Vikings and used for their wool and meat on long sea voyages. Gotland wool is coloured in shades of grey, white and black. Gotland wool was used to make the cloaks for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The importation from Scandinavia in 1986 by the NZ Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Gotland Pelt and other rare breeds, saw the commencement of a quarantined breeding programme, resulting in the release of these breeds to the New Zealand farmer in November 1990.
When we purchased our 10 acres in Marlborough in 2000, we inherited a small flock of personable Gotland sheep. From that original flock we have cross bred with NZ Romney, pure Gotland and Merino/Gotland cross breed. The sheep are good breeders, and often have twin lambs usually born black, with distinctive facial markings
Visitors can feed and pat the friendly sheep and lambs. With hosts Anne & Rob you can wander out into the paddock, take photos, and cuddle lambs (in season).
